Animal Shelters All Over the U.S. Encourage Pets Adoptions

Posted by jkingstone

Animal welfare organizations and pet shelters all around the U.S. are being overwhelmed by strays and owners who wish to leave their pets to the facilities. To avoid having to put down these homeless animals, shelters are stepping up efforts to promote pets adoptions among households who have the means to take in some of these animals.

According to majority of shelters for animals, they are faced with the problem of overpopulation, with more stray dogs and cats coming in everyday and more pet owners asking whether they can leave their pets with the shelters since they cannot care for these pets anymore.

The Almost Home Humane Society, a Lafayette, Indiana-based no-kill pet shelter, has reported that they have been receiving calls from owners who want to euthanize their pets because they don’t know how to take care of them anymore. The Society has praised veterinarians who refuse to put down animals just because their owners ask them to do so. The Lafayette facility has stopped accepting animals from unwilling owners due to lack of space, but is still taking in abandoned and stray animals.

Despite the growing problem, pet shelters stated that they still carefully screen people interested in pets adoptions. They also encourage pet owners to find a shelter for their pets if they cannot provide care to these animals anymore instead of abandoning them.

Animal care societies have reported increased number of owners who abandon their pets, with most of these homeless animals being found and reported by people buying foreclosed houses for sale during residential inspections. A shelter from Sylacauga, Alabama has even reported taking in almost 4,000 abandoned pets since January 2010, with most of them left behind by their foreclosed owners.

Animal activists and pet shelter operators have stated that owners should take responsibility over their pets and must do everything they can instead of just giving their pets up to already overcrowded shelters or abandoning them on the streets. They also remind households that there are a lot of beautiful animals available in shelters for pets adoptions and they can get one anytime.
