After two abandoned cats were rescued from a house in Dayton, Tennessee, arrangements with a local organization that specializes in pets adoptions were made. The cats were found by Stephanie Riggs, a neighbor who lives next door to the house where the two cats were reportedly trapped for two months.
According to officials from the Almost Home Pet Foundation, one of the animal shelters operating in the area, some pets suffer needlessly when owners abandon them instead of leaving them to local organizations that specialize in finding homes for unwanted animals. They added that such organizations, like the Foundation, have several processes in place designed to find permanent homes for abandoned cats and dogs.
According to shelter operators, difficulties are common in terms of finding households willing to adopt abandoned pets, primarily because not a lot of people who buy foreclosed homes for sale can be found in the market these days. However, most animal rescue organizations make use of online sources to find permanent dwellings for these homeless animals.
In the case of Almost Home Pet Foundation, they offer animals for pets adoptions by posting their profiles in Web sites like petfinder.com. The foundation also provides useful links at their own site, almosthomepf.org, to help people looking for pets find information on abandoned dogs, cats and other domestic animals.
According to Riggs, they were able to rescue the cats after a neighbor saw one of the pets peeking at the covered windows of the abandoned house. She then called the police and the officials of the city's animal control office for help and also to avoid any legal trouble of breaking and entering. The police then opened the doors and rescued the two cats that were suffering from severe malnourishment.
The cats were examined by a local veterinarian and were found to be suffering from rat bites and from lack of water and food. The claws of the two cats were reportedly removed, leaving them unable to defend themselves from the rodents that have started infesting the premises. The cats were declared healthy by the vet after a week and were subsequently made available for pets adoptions.
